30 Second Summary - 10+ Gym Bag Essentials For Beginners For Training

You need to have all the essentials in your gym bag, such as a set of sandals, athletic tape, a set of nail clippers, tea tree oil, dextrose-based powder, Jiu Jitsu Gi or No Gi gear, a small bag to hold your stinky gi or no gi stuff, and some other things that depend on daily situations. This will serve you in various ways, including preventing injury, improving focus and learning, building physical conditioning, boosting confidence, developing mental toughness, maintaining hygiene, and fostering respect.

1. Why Preparation Matters? How It Can Give a Initial Boost to Your Jiu Jitsu Journey?

Many grapplers stay confused about what they need when they are just starting in Jiu Jitsu. This is not a complex thing to answer, but grapplers see their senior belts, each carrying their own essentials, and all these essentials look different, without being similar. Despite not being so complex in nature, the question is very crucial for every grappler to answer due to the following reasons:

1.1 Prevents Injury

  • With the right gear, such as a mouth guard and joint support, you can reduce your chances of injury. This benefits you in two ways: it helps you avoid injury. The first is obviously having the right gear that supports your joints, mouth, and body.
  • The second way is that it leaves a positive impact on your mind. You know you have all the right gear, so you will train more effectively and be protected from any unwanted injury.

1.2 Improved Focus And Learning

When you take your preparation before training very seriously, your grappling improves significantly. One reason is improved focus and learning. You become more focused on whatever your Jiu Jitsu trainer is teaching you. As you grasp the concepts more clearly, your learning speed and depth improve. This ultimnatley have an effect on your grappling.

1.3 Physical Conditioning

  • Some grapplers have done workouts before starting their Jiu Jitsu training, while others are entirely new to Jiu Jitsu and lack a proper physical baseline or general conditioning because they have never done any workouts.
  • If you start doing some workouts to build general physical conditioning, you will see many benefits for your Jiu Jitsu. It will greatly improve your fitness levels. Secondly, your stamina will also improve. Both of these will increase your mat time in Jiu Jitsu, and thus your learning will become faster and more effective.

1.4 Confidence and Mental Toughness

  • You must have heard the quote: if you are confident in anything, you will certainly get it, and without confidence, you cannot be successful in anything. Having the right gear in your backpack gives you the confidence to train effectively. Your mind also becomes tough, and your confidence improves.
  • If you do not have the right gear in your pack, you will train Jiu Jitsu while having the fear that you might get injured anytime soon. You won't be able to train as effectively. So this undermines your self-belief and confidence.

1.5 Hygiene and Respect

  • Proper hygiene is very crucial for every grappler in Jiu Jitsu. The reason is that you are exposed to many infections during grappling. The risk is even higher when you train in gyms with unhygienic environments. To counter that, you need to take some essentials with you.
  • You should shower after BJJ training and wash your hands after each session if you are training for several hours, with breaks in between. There is a rule in BJJ: saving yourself from infection means saving others from infection.
  • If you take care of yourself, your hygiene, and everything you do, you will stay safe from infections. This also makes you respectable in the eyes of other grapplers, such as your training partners.

2. Top 10 Gym Bag Essentials For Beginners For Training

You will need the following things in your backpack for your Jiu Jitsu journey as a beginner:

2.1 A Set of Sandals

  • The first thing you are going to need if you are going to train in Jiu Jitsu is a set of sandals. Now, the reason it's so important to have the sandals is that sometimes you might want to run back and forth on the mat without shoes.
  • You should ask yourself, would you go to the bathroom and wipe your face all over on the bathroom floor? You will definitely say no, I wouldn't do that, because there are a lot of germs in the bathroom.
  • That's why you go to the bathroom without shoes, then walk back on the mat. You are bringing those germs back into the mat. They can lead to skin irritation, ringworm, and other infections. So make sure you have a pair of shoes when you step off the mat. When you step on the mat, take off your shoes.

2.2 Athletic Tape

The first thing you need in your gym bag is athletic tape. During your Jiu Jitsu training, you might get mat burns, or you can get your fingers messed up, and you might need a tap to cover all such things.

2.3 Set of Nail Clippers

  • The second thing you need is a set of nail clippers. You might think this is an odd thing, but you must have this because you might want to save your opponent from the scratches that can be done by your nails.
  • An accidental poke in the eye can happen at any time during training, and if you have long nails, your training partner or opponent in the match could suffer serious injury. To protect your training partner from body scratches or serious damage that can happen during eye poke, ensure you have trimmed your finger and toenails properly.
  • If you have not, trim them before training and have your training partner do the same. It will be easy for you because you have nail clippers in your gym bag.

2.4 Tea Tree Oil

  • In Jiu Jitsu training, you are exposed to a number of infections, such as ringworm infections. The risk of getting infected increases even more when you train in an unhygienic gym that does not keep its environment clean. So you should develop your own strategy to protect yourself from infection.
  • One way is to use tea tree oil. This is just an example, not medical advice. You should consult your doctor about this, and they will advise you on any cream, ointment, or tablets to use during or after training, or after a shower. This will help you to stay protected. If you are using tea tree oil, try using it with coconut oil to prevent irritation.

2.5 Dextrose Based Powder

  • The next thing you should have in your gym bag is the dextrose based powder. You can choose any brand, but make sure it contains no caffeine. The reason for keeping this power is that it will give you an instant boost in your body energy, so you will be able to perform the Jiu Jitsu moves better.
  • Sometimes, if you miss a meal while training or feel a little drained, you may not have enough energy to do the moves. In such situations, you should have something to give you an instant energy boost. Using dextrose powder will give you enough energy to train for the next few hours.

2.6 Gi or No Gi Gear

  • You should get your Gi or No Gi gear in the gym bag. Ensure you always carry both Gi and No Gi gear to the gym, even if it's supposed to be a g-day or a no-gi day. You should have both, even when you visit other gyms, you never know; you might have several situations where you have to go to an open mat, and you thought it was going to be a Gi or No Gi day.
  • If you have not started training yet, you will see most instructors advise you to get two sets of rash guards and two sets of Gis as soon as possible. This will allow you to rotate them so you don't have to wash and dry the Gi quickly if you are training for two consecutive days. Try different colors: if you have a black Gi, buy another Gi in a different color, such as orange, red, or another color you like.

2.7 A Small Bag To Hold Your Stinky Gi or No Gi Stuff

  • The last thing inside this gym bag, and this is not a usual kind of addition to the stuff most grapplers do, is the stinky bag. These bags are amazing and really, really cool, so you should start using them. You can stick all your nasty, stinky clothes in there. Then you can either wash them inside the bag, since it has a small zipper that lets the mesh come out. So you can wash them in the washer just as is. But if you have a Gi and it's just too much bulk in there, you need to dump them out.
  • The best thing about this bag is that if you are a guy and you have a wife at home who gets irritated by all your stinky No Gi stuff and your Gi stuff or whatever, this bag can save you from that. You can leave your stinky stuff in the bag for a few days, even in warm weather, but you won't really notice any smell.
  • The bag is pretty good, so if you have a nasty, stinky set of clothes sometimes and your wife goes crazy on you because of the smell, you can stick it in this bag, and it's so much easier to deal with.
  • Also, when you are travelling, and the hotel doesn't have a washing machine (which is a common issue), you can just hand your stuff in a bag to someone, and they don't have to dig through all your stuff; they can just unzip it, dump it in the washing machine, and be done with it.

2.8 Some Other Things Which Depends on Daily Situations

  • Now, let's discuss a couple of things you can keep in your car to use before and after training, depending on what's going on as you head to the gym. For example, if you like drinking coffee or eating a really spicy or pungent-smelling meal, you will have some gum on hand.
  • You can also carry mints in the gym, and if you smoke, like smoke weed or anything like that, your breath might stink. Some people don't care, but if you are super sensitive about it, you can use a good sniffer. So if it bothers you a little bit, try to keep your breath smelling good, and if someone comes in with some really stinky breath, just hand them a mint so you can roll with them.
